ArchivalResource

Essex (Schooner) logbook, 1765-1766.

The logbook of the schooner Essex details a shipping voyage from Bilbao and Cadiz to Salem and Beverly, Mass., from Dec. 1765 to Dec. 1766. The master and logbook keeper was Thomas Lee, who kept this log in an almanac diary. The logbook contains both personal and ship accounts, some mention of the fishing industry, and passenger traffic on cargo ships. This may have been Lee's personal log, rather than the formal ship's log.
